Set up in November 1997, the Association unites about 150 alumni of the HE institutions of the former USSR (mainly Russia and Ukraine) and the countries of Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary and the former Czechoslovakia).
Their prevailing fields of specialization are the following: international law, journalism, medicine, agriculture, telecommunications, finance, machine building, meteorology, civil engineering and computer technology. Most of them work in the private sector. In spite of its comparatively small membership, the Association enjoys certain influence in the Jamaican society, for it can rely on some of its members holding high positions in the government machinery and the private sector's various segments.
It is noteworthy that the highest public figure in Jamaica - Governor General G. Cook has participated in conferences of the Alumni Association and has repeatedly pointed out that he monitors its activity and finds it very useful.
Due to a number of reasons the Association's activity suffered a sharp decline between 1998 and 2000, however it actually got back on track in 2001. The 'recovery Conference' held on June 22, 2001 elicited a positive response.
